Hertz increases number of points required for free rentals by 10-15%

Last week Hertz announced a modest devaluation to its loyalty program. You may have missed the email that came out, which contained a bunch of flowery language about responding to customer feedback, etc, but here’s the meat:

Beginning October 1, 2013, point redemption levels for Rewards will increase a modest 10–15% in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and U.S.V.I.

It’s always sad to see points devalued, but I will give Hertz credit for announcing this three months before it takes effect. Honestly, Hertz’s loyalty program really isn’t one that I put too much stock in. I cash points as soon as I can for rentals as soon as I have enough points to do so and I and don’t spend any effort trying to maximize the value I’m receiving from these points.
